Tanners Wines

Steeped in tradition, 170 year old history...

Tanners Wines

Tanners Wines is in many ways a proper old fashioned wine merchant, steeped in tradition and still owned and run by the Tanner family. Behind its Tudor frontage lies a surprising maze of passageways and cellars packed full of artefacts from its 170 year history.

You can’t see into Tanners atmospheric Cellars Shop (once named in Country Life as one of the most charming shops in Britain) from Wyle Cop, you have to make a short detour through the archway into its customer car park. But it’s well worth the diversion, for once you step inside you will be met by possibly the best selection of wines in the country.

James Tanner, the 4th generation of his family to run the business, works hard to ensure that the company offers an enormous selection of quality artisan wines, at the last count from 24 different countries, as well as a fantastic range of spirits and local beers and ciders.  This means travelling widely and meeting winemakers in their own cellars, as well as maintaining relationships with them – producers of high quality wines need persuading that their bottles will reach an appreciative audience!

Over the years Tanners has built up an impressive range of ‘own brand’ wines and spirits.  Tanners Claret and Tanners Champagne remain the most popular.

Yes, Tanners is a destination for wine lovers, but believe me when I tell you, you really don’t need to be a wine buff to shop there – but once you do you may soon become one! Look out for Tanners ‘wine tasting’ cases to try at home complete with tasting notes and Tanners wine tasting masterclasses for beginners. Decent wine doesn’t need to break the bank either – the 60+ wines in Tanners Principles range are under £7.00 a bottle all year round.
